Speak Out on the DRECP! Public Comment Meetings Announced

The High Desert has been targeted for intensive energy development under the preferred alternative of the Desert Renewable Energy Conservation Plan (DRECP). Vast tracts of land in and around Lucerne Valley, Victorville, Apple Valley, Hesperia, and Adelanto are considered Development Focus Areas. That means industrial-scale solar and wind projects can be fast-tracked throughout our beautiful High Desert.

But it’s not a “done deal.” The Alliance …

Release of Draft DRECP Raises Serious Concerns

On Tuesday, September 23, 2014, a consortium of federal and California state agencies, led by Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell, held an event to announce the release of their draft master plan for renewable energy in the California desert. The event took place in North Palm Springs, California, against a backdrop of hundreds of wind turbines, many of which were turning very slowly or …

Bedeviled by Dust

If the devil is in the details, this is one detail that German industrial giant E.ON doesn’t want you to know: The rise in dust storms across the Southwest is linked to the installation of large-scale solar and wind projects. Just ask the people of Lubbock, Texas. E.ON owns and operates Roscoe Wind Farm in nearby Roscoe. (Yes, that’s the same E.ON that is targeting …

Colorado to Consider Bill to Protect Birds From Wind Turbines

Colorado will be considering first-of-its-kind legislation that would require wind farms and other renewable-energy producers to protect birds and other wildlife. Colorado State Senator David Balmer is introducing the Bird Protection Act to the state legislature in January 2015. “This bill will protect our sacred bald eagles and other bird species that currently are being killed in alarming numbers,” Senator Balmer said. But aren’t birds, …

Scottish Wind Turbine Neighbors Report Drastic Health Effects

The Scottish Express states in a recent article that people who live within two miles of large wind turbines are reporting in a government survey such drastic health effects as headaches, dizziness, tinnitus, raised blood pressure, and disturbed sleep. “Tens of thousands of Scots may be suffering from a hidden sickness epidemic caused by wind farms,” the story proclaims. The article also points out that …

Bedeviled by Dust Part 2

In Bedeviled By Dust Part 1, we told you about E.ON’s dismal record when it comes to dust control on its Texas wind farm—and its vague plan to control dust in our desert mountains with trucked-in water. Now let’s look to the experience of our neighbors to the south who are living in the dusty shadow of a massive desert wind plant. The Ocotillo Wind …

Save our Desert – Write letters NOW!

The fight against large-scale renewable energy projects is entering a new phase. When the DRECP comes out (it’s due any day), it is likely to insist on a master plan to place Big Renewables all over the desert and mountain ridgelines. The DRECP seems to think that Lucerne Valley is particularly ripe for lots of new projects. Powerful forces are behind the DRECP. However, the …
